"The Old School Yard" Community Garden
Dedicated to pupils and staff who attended
Calow Church of England School 1854 - 1973
For anyone who's a native of Calow it's very likely that you attended Calow C of E Primary (or Junior) School when it was situated on Top Road, opposite St. Peter's Church. Houses have now been built of much of the site but an area of protected green space was left - this was mainly the school playground.
It has some beautiful mature shrubs and trees around the edge, but was otherwise an empty green area of grass. That is until July 2023 when the Calow Community Gardening Group dug out the first of three beds and planted a beautiful silver birch and various perennials.
As well as two further beds (including a wheelchair accessible one) there will be a "hogging" path to lead you through to the houses and footpath. A picnic bench will be in place later in 2023, new gates will be fitted and a sign is already in place.
We want this to be an area for EVERYONE to relax, listen to nature, be at peace, chat to friends etc. etc. Our green spaces are disappearing under a mass of brick and concrete all the time, so let's all appreciate a space of calm and beauty.
